The Spis Chapter House

The Spis Chapter House

The most popular building in this area is a three-aisled St. Martin´s Cathedral built in 1245 – 1275 in Romanesque style.

There is a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, near the cathedral, who is the patron of seminary and the statue was built in 1732. The former Provost´s Palace that is now Episcopal Palace was being built alongside with the cathedral. In the east of the palace is a Clock Tower. There are several interesting Episcopal accommodations and a building of priestly seminary in this fortified area. The Spis Chapter House is a seat of Spis Bishopric and it is a Slovak cultural treasure also known as “Slovak Vatican”. Scientists discovered a unique conception of a territory that resembles medieval Jerusalem in the area between the Spis Chapter House and Pazica. The original hypothesis about the existence of so called “Spis Jerusalem” was confirmed by the historians. They were supposed to make it possible for the believers to experience Stations of the Cross as accurately as possible when pilgrimages to the Holy Land were problematic due to war with the Turks.
